Friuli Benevolent Corporation  (FBC)  

FBC operates Friuli Terrace, an apartment complex for independent seniors.  It opened its doors in 1989.

Friuli Terrace, the nine-story building that stands at the east end of the Famee campus is an important symbol of the strength and maturity of the Furlan community in Toronto.

The idea for a seniors’ residence and sports complex was born in 1986 at al Fogolâr Restaurant. Over a plate of risotto and “un tai di merlot” Primo Di Luca, Peter Bosa, Joe Zentil, Angelo Del Zotto, Tiberio Mascarin and Dino Chiesa discussed the project.  They felt confident that the Famee had the resources and the will to tackle such an ambitious undertaking.

In November 1986 at the general meeting, the board and the members of the Famee voted to present the proposal to the provincial government. When the Vaughan Council approved the building permit in January 1987 the nearly 300 Furlans filling the room cheered with joy.

Construction began with the sod turning in November 1987 and was completed by early summer 1989. On July 8 1989 the ribbon was cut and Friuli Centre came to life.

Friuli Centre is much more than a seniors' apartment building. Besides providing attractive and comfortable housing, adapted especially for seniors, the Centre offers many programs to enrich and extend the seniors’ independent lifestyle. Some of the units are Market Value rent and some are subsidised by the  Ministry of Housing.

The Director of Social Services assesses those who require assistance with homemaking and personal care. These support programs help seniors maintain their independence and dignity. Their physical and mental health is improved through the services of an Activity Co-ordinator who plans activities and social events which keep them active and stimulated.

Five years ago, the Day Program for people living in Vaughan was started, focusing on frail and isolated seniors, stroke victims, and seniors with neuro-muscular health problems. They come to the Centre to participate in a wide variety of activities and are assisted by volunteers from the Italian community who generously donate their time.
